Knock. Knock, knock.
"Hello? Deary? You awake, girl? I don't want to scare you sweetie, but I need to come in and give you some more tea. Hello?"
"Yes" oh my throat is on fire! Did she even hear me? I suppose so, 'cuz in she's a commin'.
"You poor child" this lady is different than my memory, wasn't her hair red as a sunset? My goodness, my brains must have been mushed! How could I mistake hair as white as new snow for red? I'm definitely addled.
"My name is Ruthie and I'm gonna help you take some of this tea, it'll help your throat and give you some peace - you need a lot more rest."
"How bad?" I can't seem to get more than a few sounds out...I better make them count.
"How bad will it taste?" I shake my head slowly. "Oh! you want to know, how bad are you hurt?" I nod my head slowly.
"Well, sugar, I'm not gonna lie. The fact that you are awake now is real good, and you're communicatin' with me - that means I don't think they made you into a retard, although I think they were bettin' on that. In as far as I can tell, from my experience - you might just be fine, walk with a bit of a limp probably, and we'll have to see about yer women parts, don't know if you'll be havin' any babies - but my sisters and I are real good at what we do, and it just so happens you were found by our sons - that was real lucky for you."
"No babies?" my eyes are wellin' up with tears and it's not from the pain in my throat.
"Well, sweetie, I don't know fer sure. We'll have to wait and see, but you don't worry about that right now - you need to rest, 'cuz you need to tell me who did this to you and that story is gonna take a bit outta you - so drink up this tea and rest, I'll be right here when you wake up."
Ruthie hurt inside at the thought of this pure soul being robbed of the joy of motherhood, but she got a sick smile on her face when she began to think about the particular spell she wanted to use on these men that hurt the child this way...it all works out in the end and she just had to keep on believin' that.
Oh yes, this is warming up nicely :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, that's intense. Makes me want to hear more.
ReplyDeleteAnd the plot thickens!! I can't wait to see what kind of vengeance is wreaked upon the girl's attackers!! Go Ruthie!
ReplyDeleteBuilding tension. Nice. I love the idea of vengeance witches. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! You are a born writer! So glad I can keep up with you through this blog. I hope you continue this piece. Speaking as an English teacher, you have a real talent for guiding your readers to exactly where you want them to go. And your dialog is outstanding. That's the area most writers don't do well with. Yours is so natural, so great! I look forward to reading more!!
